Vicki McLaren - Battery Engineer

My Role at Clyde Space

I am responsible for all battery projects at Clyde Space, including cell preparation, testing, qualification, and approval. I have just completed a study in collaboration with the European Space Agency to qualify our Lithium Ion Polymer Cell which is used in the Clyde Space CubeSat power system. I've attended a few conferences with Clyde Space, and enjoy talking to customers, and members of the public, about our company, and its products. I'm involved in the up-keep of the website, which we are very proud of.

Qualifications

I have a BSc (hons) in Chemistry with French from the University of Aberdeen - spent a year studying Chemistry in Clermont Ferrand, France. I also have a PhD in Battery Materials from the Department of Engineering Materials, University of Sheffield. I was lucky enough to win a scholarship during my PhD to spend 6 months researching battery materials with a research institute near Osaka, Japan.

Life Before Clyde Space

I was emplyed as a Development Engineer with Missiles and Space Batteries, and was involved in the design and development of Thermal Batteries, mainly for the Defence Industry.

Life Outside Clyde Space

I enjoy attending the gym we have here on the Science Park, and try to go every lunchtime to their classes. I particularly enjoy the urban workout on a Wednesday, though it's a real challenge! I also like lanuguages, and speak some French and some Japanese, and I do try to keep these going. I like playing clarinet and singing, and am currently researching bands and choirs in Glasgow to join.
